PRODUCT DESCRIPTION: “Powerful broad-spectrum SPF protection, deep hydration, and complete coverage all under one compact roof”
For reasons even I don’t understand, I’m irresistibly drawn to foundations in compacts. Perhaps it’s the no-muss no-fuss promise of a fully self-contained product that suggests easy-peasy application with no messy liquids or special tools required. Whatever it is, it drew me to this foundation made by Amore Pacific, a Korean skincare brand that’s made a recent foray into cosmetics.
This foundation comes in the form of a pre-moistened sponge – a format I only recall seeing utilized by drugstore brands. Maybelline made a blush in this format (maybe it still does?) and back in the 80s I remember nail polish remover being packaged the same way – just dip your nail in and it comes out clean! (It didn’t.) Every now and then a foundation will hit the market with packaging like this, but they’ve always been a bit of a flash in the pan, so though dubious about Amore Pacific’s version, I was willing to give it a go.

I have used Amore Pacific skincare products and always been impressed with them, but when I opened up this compact my heart sunk. I bought the lightest shade they offer but it looked too dark, too yellow. “No way is this going to work for me” I thought, and immediately shifted it to my mental return pile.
So I wasn’t expecting a win when I finally tried it out. I think I may have audibly gasped the first time it touched my face. The pre-moistened sponge format used is not a novelty – I’m not sure how else this foundation could be packaged. It’s like no other foundation I’ve ever used. It’s so liquidy and fluid that it’s almost like water, and it glides weightlessly and fluidly right over and into your skin. The color is spot-on for my N20 complexion, and the formula is hydrating, lightweight, and seamless.
because this absorbs into the skin so nicely, and because it’s such a good color match for me,
you can barely see it here on my hand. it’s on the half that’s closest to the camera.
Press it into your skin with the included sponge, then use it to blend and buff and you’re left with gorgeous, light coverage that camouflages redness and evens out the skin, with a dewy “I was born with perfect skin.” The finish is hard to categorize because it doesn’t really have one – once set, it sinks so seamlessly into the skin that it’s like wearing nothing.
On top of all of that, this has broad spectrum SPF 50 protection. 50! And it’s completely undetectable! Who knew sunscreen could be transformed into a weightless, water-like fluid and have no scent whatsoever? Where has this been all my life? A more perfect summertime foundation could not have been imagined. I mean, really – all this and I don’t have to wear sunscreen? Color me sold.
interestingly, it swatches darker than dr. jart+. but on my face, amore pacific is a perfect match, while dr. jart+ is too dark. the other shades shown here are also good color matches for me.
Potential downside: if you’ve ever used Amore Pacific products you’ll be familiar with their distinct and very strong scent. That same fragrance is present in this foundation. Personally, I love it. It’s fresh, almost citrusy, slightly floral and maybe a bit fruity? It is not unlike a lot of the fragrances I wear, and as I’m not sensitive to scented products, it’s not a concern for me. But the smell is very strong and does not dissipate readily.
And finally, a tip: the product does tend to sink to the bottom of the sponge. To keep it on the surface, I store my compact upside down.
This isn’t exactly easy on the wallet at $60, but it’s an investment worth looking into – and you might save money on sunscreen. It’s definitely piqued my interest in their other color formulas – they also make a traditional foundation as well as a tinted moisturizer. Both have made it to the top of my Things To Try list. But for now I can mark off my Find Summer Foundation list as DONE.
Retailers: Bergdorf Goodman, Neiman Marcus, Sephora, Nordstrom, Amore Pacific
Packaging: Silver rounded compact with push-click clasp and enclosed mirror. Compact has 2 tiers: the first tier houses the applicator sponge. The 2nd tier houses the pre-soaked foundation sponge. To replace the foundation sponge, you simply push the bottom of the compact and the foundation palette pops out.
Portable? While a tad bulky, this would be a great foundation to travel with or carry in your bag. It’s fully self-contained (the included applicator is great) and you can apply it throughout the day without it caking up. The enclosed mirror is a full 3”, so it provides plenty of room to see what you’re doing.
Sturdy? Very. The package is well-designed, easy to open, and snaps shut securely. Has a luxury feel and look.
